Salt Typhoon has previously compromised major U.S. telcos like AT&T and Verizon to monitor and record communications. The breach exposed flaws in the implementation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), which mandates network security but has been inconsistently enforced. In response, the FCC proposed new requirements for providers to develop and regularly update comprehensive cybersecurity plans, aiming to fortify network defenses against cyber threats. Additionally, the agency stressed the need for revising outdated laws to reflect modern cybersecurity challenges.
