Scientists predict the Axial Seamount, an active underwater volcano on the Juan de Fuca ridge near Oregon, will erupt this year. Monitored by the Ocean Observatories Initiative, the volcano's inflation increased significantly in 2024, leading to predictions of an imminent eruption by earth scientists led by William Chadwick. The seamount, known for past eruptions in 1998, 2011, and 2015, shows signs consistent with previous eruptions, including increased seismic activity and significant inflation. While exact impacts remain uncertain, seamount eruptions typically have less terrestrial impact than land volcanoes.
