Despite the steady annual occurrence of about 47 tropical cyclones since 1980, their intensity has notably increased. Recent data highlights a rise in the average maximum wind speed from 182kph to 192kph, marking a 5% increase. Category five cyclones have become more common, now accounting for 1.4 in 10 storms. This trend aligns with the IPCC's warning of intensifying cyclones due to climate change, which exacerbates their impact by affecting vulnerable populations. In 2024, 42 cyclones were recorded, with Hurricane Milton as the most powerful, and notable destruction occurred in regions like the West Pacific and Mayotte.
