In December 2024, JAXA deployed LignoSat, a wooden satellite, from the ISS to explore using wood in space. This initiative is aimed at finding sustainable alternatives to traditional satellites. Initial experiments tested different wood species in space, choosing honoki magnolia wood assembled with Japanese wood-joinery for LignoSat's design. Researchers will measure wooden panels' responses to space conditions, including temperature, radiation, and geomagnetic interference. Successfully utilizing wood in space could inspire future innovative technologies.
