The US Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against farming equipment manufacturer Deere & Company for restricting farmers from repairing their own machinery with its software limitations. Deere only licenses the required digital keys to authorized dealers, preventing access to convenient third-party repairs or self-fixes. This practice, the FTC argues, is anti-competitive and violates the right to repair, posing significant delays for farmers, especially during critical farming periods. Despite ongoing advocacy, little change has been made to enhance accessibility until now, with the FTC pushing for Deere to make its software available to all users.
