A new study published in PLoS Biology highlights the ongoing reproducibility crisis in biomedical research, attributing it largely to the "publish or perish" culture. This culture pressures researchers to prioritize quantity over quality, leading to irreproducible results. More than 1600 biomedical scientists participated in the study, revealing that 72% perceive a significant reproducibility crisis in their field. The study emphasizes that irreproducibility not only undermines scientific progress but also causes patient harm. Participants pointed to inadequate study design, poor peer review, and insufficient reproducibility training as contributors. The survey suggests that improved institutional support and ongoing monitoring could enhance reproducibility efforts in biomedical research.
