The Brunswick Peninsula in southern Chile is poised to become a significant part of a route of national parks through Patagonia with the establishment of Cape Froward as Chile's 47th national park in March 2024. This conservation effort, championed by U.S. philanthropist Kristine Tompkins of Tompkins Conservation, aims to protect one of Earth's last truly wild places. Tompkins and her late husband, Douglas, have been instrumental in creating 15 national parks across Chile and Argentina. The initiative not only preserves biodiversity but also seeks to harmonize economic activities with nature. Rewilding Chile and Rewilding Argentina continue to rehabilitate ecosystems by reintroducing species and maintaining expansive protected areas. The creation of Cape Froward National Park underscores a commitment to large-scale conservation strategies, involving local communities and highlighting the importance of sustainable development.
