The world's wealthiest 1% have surpassed their fair share of the global carbon budget for 2025 within the first ten days of the year, as reported by Oxfam GB. This elite group's consumption resulted in 2.1 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, a stark contrast to what it would take the poorest 50% three years to produce. These emissions exacerbate climate change, already causing extreme weather and threatening food security and habitats. Despite the wealthiest contributing disproportionately to carbon emissions, it's the poorest who suffer most. Oxfam urges governments to tax high-emission luxuries like private jets and yachts to ensure equitable climate action.
