Researchers from Google Research have developed a groundbreaking method to map the ionosphere by utilizing millions of Android smartphones. This innovative approach addresses the limitations of traditional ground-based GNSS stations, which have uneven coverage and leave gaps in underserved areas. By using dual-frequency GNSS receivers in smartphones, the study doubled ionospheric measurement coverage globally, surpassing traditional models like the Klobuchar ionospheric model. Despite individual measurements being less precise, the aggregate data from smartphones achieved accuracy comparable to dedicated stations, enhancing real-time TEC maps, particularly in regions like India, South America, and Africa. The research also effectively tracked geomagnetic storms and other phenomena with high precision.
