Health Risks Linked to Common Plastic Additives

An international study suggests that exposure to common plastic additives such as BPA, DEHP, and PBDEs may be linked to millions of cases of heart disease, stroke, and deaths globally. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 1,700 studies across 38 countries, finding significant health and economic impacts. BPA, often found in food packaging, could be responsible for 431,000 deaths, with $1 trillion in economic impact. DEHP, in flexible plastics, might be linked to 164,000 deaths, costing $398 billion. PBDEs, used as flame retardants, may decrease intelligence levels. Although the study stresses global action is needed, critics urge caution due to insufficient causal proof. The researchers advocate for stricter regulations akin to pharmaceutical standards to ensure public health safety.
