A 1.2-million-year-old Antarctic ice core, the oldest known, has been recovered from 9,000 feet underground near the Concordia Research Station by scientists from the Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice project. This core offers a detailed climate record, compressing up to 13,000 years of historical climate data into one meter of ice. The study aims to explore the connection between the carbon cycle and historical climate changes, providing insights into major climate shifts between 900,000 and 1.2 million years ago. The core will be analyzed in Europe to further understand past glaciations and atmospheric conditions.
